Op-Ed: An air ambulance saved this Veteran's life, but VA plans to cut access

On June 28, 2024, Army Veteran Dan McKeaney retold the story of his air ambulance rescue after he sustained critical injuries in a motorcycle accident. The story was featured in USA Today:

In 2022, I nearly lost my life in a motorcycle accident. While taking a Veterans’ ride with my wife, Jeri, one of our tires suddenly blew out as we made our way from Phoenix to Las Vegas. My wife suffered a concussion and severe facial lacerations. My injuries were more serious as I sustained multiple fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, a bruised heart, a lacerated spleen, a torn meniscus and a high-grade concussion. Shortly after, an air ambulance team arrived and transported me to a hospital in Las Vegas to receive lifesaving care.

While my wife’s injuries healed, mine were so severe that I needed to be placed into a three-and-a-half-week, medically-induced coma. Thankfully, I have since made a full recovery. But there is no doubt in my mind I would have died that day had it not been for the first responders and air ambulance coming to the scene of my crash, quickly administering care and saving my life.
